Acne scars sit below the surface
An acne scar forms when a breakout damages the collagen that supports your skin. The skin repairs itself unevenly and leaves dents or rough patches behind. Creams can’t reach that deep, and time alone rarely smooths them out.
Microneedling works with your skin’s own repair process. Tiny openings prompt the skin to rebuild, slowly, over months. There’s no heat or light involved. That matters for brown and deeper skin, because heat can react with melanin, the pigment in your skin.
What to expect during treatment
Plan on about an hour: 30 minutes for numbing cream to work, then 20–30 minutes of treatment. A sterile, single-use needle tip moves across your skin in steady passes. You’ll feel vibration and a scratchy feeling, a bit more over bone.
You’ll leave red and warm, like a sunburn. That typically settles over one to three days.

Microneedling is planned for adults with acne scars on the face, especially shallow, rolling, or pitted scars, who can commit to a short series of sessions. The microneedling device we use is FDA-authorized for the treatment of facial acne scars in all skin types.

How we do it
It starts with a close look at your skin tone, your scars, and your history. The plan is built for your skin from there: usually about three sessions, a month apart. We take photos in the same light before each session, so you can compare over time.
Every session uses a new sterile tip, and we use the device as it was studied, with no add-ons. Microneedling isn’t offered yet. It’s planned for a later date.
Downtime and aftercare
- Expect redness and warmth for 1–3 days, then possible light dryness or flaking.
- For the first 24 hours, use only the products we send you home with, and no makeup until your skin has settled.
- Skip retinoids, exfoliating acids, and scrubs until your skin has fully calmed.
- Avoid hard workouts, saunas, and pools for 48 hours.
- Wear sunscreen daily and avoid strong sun during your series.
- You’ll get written aftercare after every session.
Results timeline
Days 1–3: redness settles. Weeks 2–4: early smoothing can begin. Most plans are about three sessions a month apart, and your skin can keep rebuilding for 3–6 months after the last one. Any change in scars is gradual, so we compare photos at each visit.

Does microneedling hurt?
With numbing cream, most people feel vibration and a scratchy feeling rather than sharp pain. Areas over bone can feel more tender. Afterward your face will feel warm and look red, like a sunburn.
Can microneedling darken or burn my skin?
Microneedling uses no heat or light, so it doesn’t burn the way a laser can. Any treatment that causes redness can sometimes leave dark marks on brown and deeper skin. We plan conservatively and go over aftercare and daily sunscreen with you.
Can I book microneedling now?

Does microneedling work on brown and dark skin?
It can. The microneedling device we use is FDA-authorized for the treatment of facial acne scars in all skin types. We still look at your skin and your scars before making any plan.
Why did you choose this device?
Because of who was in its studies. They included people with olive, brown, and deep brown skin, not just lighter skin. For the clients we see, that matters.
How is microneedling different from laser resurfacing?
Both aim to help your skin rebuild. Lasers use heat, and heat can react with the pigment in brown and deeper skin. Microneedling uses tiny needles instead, with no heat or light. That’s one reason it’s often a more conservative place to start for acne scars in deeper skin tones.
How much downtime is there?
Expect 1–3 days of redness, sometimes with light dryness or flaking. Most people feel fine going out the next day. Makeup can usually go back on after about 24 hours.

What kinds of acne scars can it help?
Shallow, rolling, and pitted scars are the usual focus. Very deep, narrow scars tend to change less with any needling, and we’ll talk through other options at your consultation.
